Power conversion losses

Power conversion losses in a narrowest sense, are losses in the process of converting electrical energy in other types of energy (mechanical, cooling, heating, etc.). Most of these losses are experienced as dissipation, i.e. equipment, cable, transformer, etc… (over)heating.

Reduction of conversion losses makes significant part of savings for one manufacturing plant. Especially if one takes into consideration the dominant role of electrical energy in great number of companies, as well as the trend of constant rise in prices of electricity. Power quality direct losses arise from steady state operation of industrial machinery supplied by distorted voltage. This can have various consequences, from increased motor shaft vibrations and development of breaking torque to elevated heating of conductors.
